In commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , Atlanta took to the streets on MLK Day, Monday January 15.  Thousands of people lined the parade route and many grassroots organizations marched in the MLK Day Parade.   Some of the groups participating included United for Jamaica and The Georgia Caribbean American Complete Count Committee partnering with the U.S. Census.  The small but powerful contingency,  proudly chanted “You Matter, You Count” and “Count Me Black”.

The energetic group of marchers reveling as if in a Carnival mas camp delivered their important message consistently throughout the parade.  I think we get it – complete the census form and, if you’re Caribbean, write in this information too!!  Great job and biggups to WRFG’s Jason Skywalker, Rose Grant and James Hulbert from the Caribbean-American Complete Count Committee for coming out and lending their support!

Pictured here is Dr. King’s daughter,  Dr. Bernice Albertine King, who also took part in the MLK Day festivities.

Of note, plans for a major motion picture about Dr. King’s life, previously derailed due to family squabbling, are back on track.  The film to be produced  by Oscar-winning director, Steven Spielberg is being distributed by DreamWorks.  DreamWorks announced that there were “authorized by the King estate to utilize the intellectual property of Dr. King to create the definitive portrait of his life.”  DreamWorks has also brought on Oscar-winning screenwriter Ronald Harwood to pen a script.
