South Africa’s National Women’s Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on August 9th
annually which commemorates the national march of women in 1956 to petition against legislation that
required African persons to carry a “pass”. The pass laws required South Africans to carry and present
on demand an internal passport that served to maintain population segregation during apartheid (a system of institutionalized racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa between 1948 – 1991). On August 9, 1956, 20,000 women staged a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against
proposed amendments to the act — Wathint’ Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo! — “You strike a woman, you
strike a rock” this mantra has come to represent women’s courage and strength in South Africa . With its
first celebration having occurred on August 9, 1994, the commemoration focuses on social issues relevant to the struggles of present day South African Women.
