Recently, at a private NYC screening of “Greenleaf” hosted by Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), I was given the honor of interviewing two of the main characters. Team RCS sat down with Emmy-award winner, Lynn Whitfield “Lady Mae Greenleaf” (A Thin Line Between Love & Hate, Josephine Baker Story) and Keith David “Bishop James Greenleaf” (Enlisted, Community and best known for his co-starring role as Child’s in The Thing and several mainstream films such as Crash, Barbershop and one of my favorites, Dead Presidents). Both actors were gracious and a pleasure to chat with about the much anticipated mega-church drama series.
Many of us know that within the black church fashion plays an integral part of the Sunday ritual, Greenleaf is no different. We discussed how fashion plays a role in Greenleaf and in the church and they shared who their favorite designers were. I also asked them who they drew their characters from and why did they decide to take on these roles.
“The ambassadorial position of a First Lady in the front of everything …the graciousness that she’s responsible for in the church, the hardcore gatekeeper that she must be in the institution protecting her husband, protecting her children, the family and the platform I thought that it would be a very exciting character to explore and to explore with the approval and encouragement of the likes of our icon Miss Winfrey.” ~Lynn Whitfield
Check out the interview and don’t forget to tune into Greenleaf on Tuesday, June 21 and Wednesday, June 22nd at 10pm EST on the OWN Network. Check out the extended trailer for “GREENLEAF” here: https://youtu.be/RAezT88migU
