VP Records has been a bastion and conduit of Jamaican music in New York City since its inception. Founded in Jamaica, Queens in 1977 with roots reaching back to Kingston, the story of the label is woven into the story of Jamaican music itself, from ska to rocksteady to reggae to dub to dancehall. The label returns to SummerStage with a showcase featuring a review of Jamaican artists making “roots reggae,” a subgenre rooted in Black liberation, revolution, and the spiritual elements of the Rastafari religion. Last year’s event featured a clash of ‘90s dancehall and hip-hop with Slick Rick and Wayne Wonder.
