Zulema George, Boutique-nista & Owner of AK Couture

Fashion designer Zulema N.George was the ‘hostess with the mostess’ recently inviting the fashion tastemakers of New York into her establishment AK Couture Boutique and Beauty bar in Brooklyn.  The grand event took place recently to showcase the fashions, accessories and beauty products in her beauty bar.  Zulema, who is a St. Vincent island girl, is definitely a style star and successful entrepreneur. Zulema has established herself as one of New York City’s premiere independent fashion designers of Caribbean descent. AK Couture Boutique and Beauty Bar showcases the boutique’s inventory which consists of “one-of-a kind” pieces from independent designers that fuses couture trends with urban chic swa.  AK Couture Boutique also features a wide range of hygiene and beauty products such as organic handmade soaps including Zulema George’s signature body butter Kisses and Fairy Dust, which after sampling, is buttery soft and has a light delicate scent. This recent event wasn’t just about fashion, it was also an awareness event to promote education about Sickle Cell disease.  Nurse Nikki Gooden of SYNC-NOW was on site who gave a presentation and gave out educational information to keep Brooklyn fashionistas abreast about the disease.

Starting as an image consultant, Zulema channeled her creativity and utilized her eye for detail while styling for recording artists, models & actors/actresses.  Her vision was the centerpiece for several high end music videos and photoshoots.  She later decided to follow her passion to design handbags after growing increasingly weary of purchasing bags made from inferior materials that wore hefty price tags. “A handbag is more than an accessory,” says Zulema. It’s an extension of you”.  Zulema strives for the “AK woman” and “AK man” to exemplify one who lives freely, loves fearlessly and stands out from the crowd both stylishly and distinctively.

The evening was filled with libations, cupcakes and a fashion show featuring designs from Sazie Rahman of Sazie Designs. The fashions from her collection had hints Indian influences and Guyanese flavor.  The parade of frocks began on Church Avenue and culminated in the boutique.  Check out the pics!!
