HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez successfully underwent surgery in Havana on Monday, according to the countrys vice president Elias Jaua, who read an official communiqu from the Office of the Presidency to the members of the National Assembly in Caracas.
A total extraction of the diagnosed pelvic lesion was performed, removing also the tissue surrounding the lesion. There were no complications relating to his local organs. He is recovering correctly, Jaua noted, before adding that tests would be carried out on the extracted tissue to determine whether the lesion had been malignant and to establish a possible follow-up treatment.
The Venezuelan vice president pointed out that Chavez is in good physical condition, in the company of his family and in constant contact with his executive vice president and ministers.
Jaua said Chavez wanted to express his gratitude for the warm support and expressions of solidarity that he has received from the Venezuelan people, from heads of state and government, from leaders and representatives of social and international organizations, and from people all over the world.
In particular, on behalf of the people of Venezuela, he wants to thank Fidel (Castro) and Raul (Castro), the Cuban people, and the team of medical specialists who performed the surgery with scientific wisdom and human warmth, the Venezuelan official added.
