Acclaimed Actress and Activist Alfre Woodard and Artists for a New South Africa Celebrate Archbishop Desmond Tutu at Special Benefit in San Francisco on October 30th

Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning, Oscar and GRAMMY nominated actress Alfre Woodard will headline a special benefit for Artists for a New South Africa celebrating the release of the new book honoring Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, entitled “Tutu: Authorized,” published in honor of his 80th birthday. The benefit will take place Sunday, October 30th from 4 to 6 PM at the Jazz Heritage Center Gallery in San Francisco.

The event will feature a tribute from afar for Archbishop Tutu as Ms. Woodard, Deborah Santana and noted friends read selected portions from the new book published in honor of his 80th birthday. “Tutu: Authorized” features interviews with President Obama, Kofi Annan, Aug San Suu Kyi, and numerous ANSA supporters including Harry Belafonte, Jackson Browne, Samuel & LaTanya Jackson, Quincy Jones, Hugh Masekela, Deborah Santana, Blair Underwood, Alfre Woodard and other luminaries.

“Desmond Tutu is one of the moral giants of our time and he’s as funny and kind as he is brave and outspoken,” said Sharon Gelman, executive director of Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA). “We are honored to have worked with him closely for the last 15 years.”

The event will include food, drink, art, and film clips. VIP tickets start at $250 and include a 3 PM VIP reception. General admission tickets start at $45. Space is limited and RSVPs are required. Tickets can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com/event/2226182572 or by emailing info@ansafrica.org. The Jazz Heritage Center is located at 1320 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA 94115.

Event proceeds benefit ANSA, a nonprofit founded in 1989 by Alfre Woodard, Danny Glover, Mary Steenburgen, Blair Underwood, CCH Pounder and friends to support an end to apartheid. Since then, ANSA has raised and granted over nine million dollars to effective African organizations, shipped over 20 tons of books and medical supplies to poor communities and, for the last eight years, provided comprehensive, ongoing care to 3,500 AIDS orphans. ANSA works in the U.S. and Africa to combat HIV/AIDS, advance human rights, preserve the legacy of heroes of the anti-apartheid movement, and build bonds between our nations through arts, culture and the pursuit of social justice. www.ansafrica.org
