One of dancehall reggae’s best, J Capri, passed away Friday at the all too young age of 23.

Capri was hospitalized for more than a week following a vehicular accident, according to the Jamaica Observer. She was held at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

The initial reports of the accident were just rumors but as time passed they became more real. Capri, whose full name is Jordan Phillips, was rushed to the hospital on November 23 after reportedly sustaining a fractured skull and brain damage. There were also requests from the surrounding community for blood prior to her death.

Her passing away is extra sad due to reports that she had shown signs of improvement after being in an induced coma. According to sources, Capri was driving at about 3 a.m. near the Barbican area of St. Andrew when she lost control of the car she was driving and hit a wall.

J Capri was known as a rising star in reggae and had crossover ability. Her most successful single to date, “Wine and Kotch” (featuring popular dancehall artist Charly Black), hit number 1 on the iTunes charts in over seven countries and had her touring extensively as a result. December 24 would have been her 24th birthday.
