January 12 Is A National Day of Remembrance and Reflection
The Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), is joining forces with Haitian Citizens in the Diaspora to commemorate the first anniversary of the January 12, 2010 earthquake.
To that end, MHAVE is officially declaring the 12th of January as “National Day of Remembrance and Reflection”, and is inviting every Haitian Citizen and every Caribbean in the Diaspora to join the commemoration on that day as follows:
- Fly the Haitian flag at half-mast.
- Wear a black armband, button, or ribbon.
- Observe 35 seconds of silence, on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at 4:35 p.m.
- For the home pages of internet sites and online forums of Haitian community organizations and churches – declare 4:35 p.m. to midnight, on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 as our official mourning period.
- For radio and television stations, observe 35 seconds of silence, on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 4:35 p.m., and air throughout the day programs and music appropriate for this sad occasion.
- Close entertainment venues (i.e., bars, pubs, night clubs, billiard rooms, etc.).
- Hold religious services, and other appropriate activities in all the community centers and churches of the Diaspora.
The Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad honors the memory of the 300,000 victims of the January 12, 2010 earthquake, and invites all Haitian citizens to redouble their efforts for the renewal of our beloved country.
