I am SO excited about the recently released and critically-acclaimed movie “DOPE” The movie stars Caribbean American Shameik Moore (Jamaica) as a geeky Harvard-bound teenager who inadvertently gets caught up in a drug deal gone bad. Shameik Moore along with director Rick Famuyiwa and cast mate Kap G recently attended a private “DOPE” screening in Atlanta. Your girl was in da building and I was truly humbled by the invite.

I’m excited about this movie for a few reasons. First and foremost, Shameik Moore is Caribbean American! The another reason is because I have been a supporter/fan/follower of Shameik Moore for years. I remember the first time I saw him perform (circa 2010) and was so impressed I inquired about him only to find out that I knew his father, veteran reggae singer, Errol Moore. So, although it may appear Shameik is an “overnight success”, he is not! Shameik has been hard at work for years! Its also great to see more movies being produced by people of color. When there is diversity behind the lens in addition to great talent in front of the lens, the difference is clear.
Shameik once did an interview with me and the Caribbean Runnings crew at WRFG 89.3FM Atlanta and I have never seen the phone lines more lit up. Little girls were literally crying, screaming and shuttering just to SPEAK with him.
Anyhoo, since Shameik Moore and his team were kind enough to include the Red Carpet Shelley team during the recent Atlanta screening of “DOPE“, I must tell you that you MUST go see it. The movie is a new age coming of age movie. Given the who’s who of people involved with the making of this well-written movie I’m certain it will become a classic ala Boyz in the Hood.
“DOPE” is produced by Forest Whitaker, executive produced by Pharrell Williams, and co-executive produced by Sean Combs, and stars Shameik Moore, Kimberly Elise, Chanel Iman, Quincy Brown, Zoe Kravitz and A$AP Rocky. The film is currently in theaters.
