Victor Gonzalez, Jr. to Make NASCAR History as 1st Caribbean Driver in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

Victor Gonzalez, Jr. will make NASCAR history on Sunday, June 23, 2013 in Sonoma, California when he becomes the first Caribbean driver to drive in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Gonzalez, Jr. will join Juan Pablo Montoya in the race as the only two Hispanic drivers racing at the highest level of NASCAR. Gonzalez Jr. will pilot the #36 Chevrolet for Tommy Baldwin Racing in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway this Sunday.

“I am proud that I will break new ground for NASCAR and help to introduce new Hispanic fans in the Caribbean to this great sport,” Gonzlez, Jr. said. “I am especially happy to make my Sprint Cup debut in California, a state with such a large and diverse Hispanic population.”
A Puerto Rican native who now races for his resident country, the Dominican Republic, Gonzalez Jr., made history in 2009 when he was the first Caribbean driver to compete in a NASCAR Nationwide Series event, finishing 14th in his debut in the 2009 running of the NAPA 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada. Gonzalez Jr. returned to the Nationwide Series for four races in 2010, making his oval track debut at Phoenix International Raceway. In 2012, Gonzalez raced in the Nationwide Series at Road America and at Watkins Glen International.
“The race at Sonoma is going to be a big day for my fans in the Carribean, and for Hispanic racing fans everywhere.” Gonzalez, Jr. said. “Along with the great team at Tommy Baldwin Racing, I am ready to show the world what I can do at the highest level.”
