The Candid Photographic Exhibit Opens in New York

New York, New York — June 6, 2014 — The exhilarating photographic exhibit “Dancehall: Music, Life and Culture” by renowned photographer Marlon “Ajamu” Myrie, opens in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday,  June 21, 2014 (5-10 PM) at Brooklyn Fete (1515 Nostrand Avenue). The highly anticipated exhibit captures the essence of Dancehall through dozens of diverse photos, which highlight some of the genre’s leading artists, living legends, epic moments and historical figures.

The exhibit, which embodies the story of Dancehall through photos, is befitting for both followers of the Arts and bonafide Dancehall fans. With music provided by DJ Roy of Road International, delectable Caribbean fare an captivating photos in the pristine environment of Brooklyn Fete, “Dancehall: Music, Life and Culture” will come to life. The exhibit will also be open to the public on Sunday, June 22, 2014 (12-6 PM).
“I wanted to expose the richness of Dancehall and its artists in another medium, outside of the norm,” says Marlon “Ajamu” Myrie. “I thought that a photographic exhibit was an ideal and mature vehicle of expanding Dancehall’s visibility.”
“Dancehall: Music, Life and Culture” will offer exhibit-goers a rare and candid glimpse of Dancehall. Ingeniously selected and arranged by Marlon “Ajamu” Myrie, the photos on display span 20 years and perfectly showcase the genre’s individuality, diversity and impact on Pop culture. Sure to make an indelible mark in the Arts community, “Dancehall: Music, Life and Culture” features one-of-a-kind photos  of Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Ninja Man, Shaggy, Frankie Paul, Alton Ellis and many more iconic mainstays. Although the exhibit’s core photographs have a strong Dancehall affiliation, a myriad of photos portray aspects of entertainment in the greater Caribbean diaspora.

A first solo exhibit for the popular photographer and the first of its kind in the Arts community, Marlon “Ajamu” Myrie strives for “Dancehall: Music, Life and Culture” to elevate the genre and “leave an imprint and lasting memory of Dancehall on the minds of patrons.” The photographer is confident that the exhibit’s photos will have people talking for quite some time, especially those that capture a behind-the-scenes snapshot of the featured subject’s lives.
Marlon “Ajamu” Myrie is the World’s premiere photographer in the Caribbean entertainment sector. Hailing from humble beginnings in St. Mary, Jamaica, early on, Ajamu recognized his flair for the camera. Upon his arrival to America, over 20 years ago, Ajamu hit the ground running, landing a position as a photojournalist at a family owned publication. Fast forward to 2014 and Ajamu has cemented himself as a powerful figure in the industry. What started as a heartfelt hobby has catapulted into an esteemed and lucrative career.
Much to his credit, Ajamu boasts a rich portfolio, as his photos have been regularly published in high profile print and online media outlets including Vibe, Source, Jet,Essence.com, New York Times, Village Voice, LA Times, Miami Herald, New York Daily News, GQ and numerous others. His captivating photos are also a staple in international publications, especially those based in the Caribbean.
When asked about his favorite photo in the exhibit, the high powered, sometimes soft-spoken photographer quipped, “It’s impossible for me to choose just one. I put all
of my passion behind each photo. They are all my babies…..each one speaks for itself. You choose your favorite!” Brooklyn is one of the many stops pegged by the famed photographer for his mobile “Dancehall: Music, Life and Culture” exhibit.
