The Virgin Islands Carnival Committee kicked off the 2014 Carnival schedule on Saturday, April 5, with the Bud Light Platinum Calypso Elimination Tent, at the Crown Bay Center. Seventeen calypsonians battled Saturday night for the opportunity to become one of ten finalist to compete against reigning Calypso King Souljah for the 2014 Calypso Monarch title.
The elimination was held in two rounds, with King Kan, Sarrow, General Val, Solemnity, Incredible Shark, Singing Jackie, Mighty Pat, King Spade and Super T competing in round #1. King Generic, Broc Lee, Ras Nisha, King Paul, X Man, Toby Dee and Tumba competed in round #2. To the delight of a packed crowd, the calypsonians delivered songs ranging from comical to uplifting, from political commentary to honoring heroes. By the end of the competition the judges were prepared to reveal the names of those calypsonians moving forward
The finalists selected to compete for the Carnival 2014 Calypso Monarch title against King Souljah are: Singing Jackie, Mighty Pat, Broc Lee, Solemnity, King Kan, Sarrow, King Spade, Super T, Toby Dee, and Ras Nisha. The V.I. Calypso Competition will be held on Thursday, April 24, at 8 p.m. in the Lionel Roberts Stadium.
