Viewing the Studio 189 Collection was a true adventure in itself from start to finish. Co-Founders Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah brought us on a journey from how their collection was cultivated leading up to the final product; the runway show debuting their collection! The show started off with a video of their “Why” behind Studio 189.
Studio 189 is an artisan produced fashion lifestyle and social enterprise with products made in Africa. They focus on producing African inspired content and clothing. The mission of the brand is to empower individuals around the world and in Africa, create job opportunities in African countries, and support educational programs.
The collection was so rich in culture; it was an unforgettable and amazing experience. Fashion meets culture when it came to this collection! The energy from the performers and the audience were so in sync. There was not one outfit that did not include a pop of color or an extravagant print. Each piece was chic, colorful and bright and held the heritage of Africa.
A common theme I loved and have been noticing throughout NYFW has been including models with disabilities on the runway. People are noticing and paying attention to how important it is to shed light on these individuals. It sends a message that you can be fierce, confident, and fearless despite your disabilities. Empowering disabled individuals gives them hope and encouragement, especially for young girls and boys who are watching. What a wonderful way of showing other forms of diversity on the runway.
After the models strut down the runway, a series of performances took over the show. Some of which included a tribute to Aretha Franklin by former American Idol contestant Frenchie Davis, and an African dance performance with popular dance moves, some of which I recognized! Celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Maxwell, and Naomi Campbell gracefully made their way to the front row as they cheered on and gazed in amazement throughout the show.
All in all, Studio 189 was an incredible show infused with culture, black girl magic, diversity, and colorful clothing! The Co-Founders are dedicated to use fashion to make the world a better place, and make it priority for consumers to know where their products were made.
