The BET Awards 2013 is now history but I will forever remember the impressive Caribbean moment that was! I will also remember the surprise, shock and happy moment when I realized that Beenie Man AND Elephant Man were on the BET Awards Red Carpet.
This was a big moment for reggae, dancehall and the Caribbean. Kudos to all involved with the production of the dancehall set at the BET Awards 2013. Glad I was there to witness!
Now, that’s the good news but I have been very vocal about my displeasure about BET having no category for any of the genres of music coming out of the Caribbean, especially reggae. Reggae is one of the most global genres of music and it is undeniably the music of the world! To have an entire Caribbean set but have no formal recognition of the genre of music being performed via nominations is an oversight and a disservice to the talented artists who performed on behalf of BET.
We are making progress so let’s hope that next year BET will have made this change. I want to see nominations for reggae, dancehall, soca something/anything Caribbean! It is only fitting and appropriate for next year’s show. And, as we saw with this year’s BET Awards, “Anything Can (and did!) Happen”.
