Over the weekend, 340 Men Inc., in partnership with the Beautiful Dreamers Ltd, hosted a fundraiser screening of “TIMELESS: A Virgin Islands Love Story” at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center in Decatur, GA. Filmed in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the movie is an intricately woven love story that juxtapositions a love beginning in 19th Century Ghana and transitioning to the harsh realities of life and love in today’s Virgin Islands.
Caribbean and Atlanta tastemakers from far and wide attended the fundraising event including filmmaker John Wheatley, DJ/Actor Benny Demus, Guyana Consulate Marva Jacobs, Deidre McDonald, BronzeLens Film Festival, Kay Millner, US Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, and international recording artist Pressure Busspipe. Writer/director Edward LaBorde Jr. was in also attendance along with cast members Monai Greene, Kmisha Victoria Count (aka K. Victoria) and Kenya Eugene. Event organizers Russell Cills of 340 Men Inc and Dr. Vincentia Paul-Constantin of Beautiful Dreamers Ltd. were on hand working hard to ensure a successful evening.
The evening began with a cocktail reception replete with a mocko jumbie dancer (Allison Mollenar) and a cultural performance by Caribbean Heritage Dancers. And what’s a Caribbean event without carnival masqueraders?
At the screening, film director Ed LaBorde explained that the project basically had no funding however he didn’t let that deter him. The filmmaker maintained his steadfast determination and many doors opened (literally!). If he lacked budget to rent a beautiful Virgin Islands villa, there were generous folks along the way who donated in creative ways such as their homes.
Following the screening there was a brief Q&A with the director and cast members. The event was a success, please enjoy the photos!
