According toLancasterOnline.com,, the idea originated with Angela Tilghman, a McCaskey East instructional coach who was alarmed at the poor academic performance of the school’s black students.Only about a third of McCaskey’s African-Americans scored proficient or advanced in reading on last year’s Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA), compared with 60 percent of white students and 42 percent of all students.
And, what’s more alarming is that a black teacher came up with this ridiculous idea. I think Ms. Tilghman is to be commended for trying to work toward a solution and I support that. And I support mentoring its a tried and proven method for success. However, mentoring based on race or gener is simply UNCONSTITUTIONAL. So we group ALL black kids together for mentoring? So what if some of the black kids are over-achieving or conversely what about the white students who are failing?
Shouldn’t we mentor the failing students as a group not as a race????
What do you think…let me hear from you….
