While I was visiting Barbados last week, the island was all abuzz about an impending
visit from television superstar, Oprah. Oprah came to the island to interview another superstar, Rihanna. Word is still out on whether Oprah enjoyed some flying fish and cou cou but I’m sure she must have had a swig of Barbados’ infamous rum Mount Gay (if she didn’t I had enough for us both!).
While superstar Bajan songstress Rihanna was expected home for the climax of Barbados’ annual Crop Over carnival celebrations few knew that this year she would be accompanied by a special guest ( except for RCS!)
Oprah Winfrey joined the 24-year-old hit maker on a tour of the Caribbean island, filming shots along Barbados’ famed ‘platinum coast’ on the west of the island, as well as some urban elements from Rihanna’s more humble beginnings. These shots are expected to be used in previews and scenes for an August 19 airing of “Oprah’s Next Chapter” where Winfrey will interview the Barbadian beauty.
News of the link-up between two of the wealthiest women in showbiz started to surface after the singer and the talk-show host were spotted spending time together on Saturday (August 4) while they were filming for the interview.
And the two fuelled the media buzz themselves, taking to social media to post photos and teasing captions of the two of them together.
“Look who popped up in my Hometown BARBADOS,” Rihanna wrote in a caption of a picture which shows her taking the wheel of a car with the former daytime talk-show queen sitting on the passenger seat. Rihanna was all smiles as she drove 58-year-old Winfrey around in jeep.
Winfrey posted the same photo on her Instagram and commented, “Look who’s driving me around Barbados!”
Winfrey also shared an image featuring them walking down the stairs of the plush One Sandy Lane Villa. “@rihanna and I finishing up interview. What a refreshing surprise she is!” the philanthropist teased. Rihanna looked relaxed, happy and very demure in a long floral maxi dress.
The interview will air on Winfrey’s channel OWN. Rihanna last was on the same show as Winfrey when she stopped by “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, back in 2010, during which she covered Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” to benefit the victims of the Haiti earthquake
Rihanna’s return to Barbados follows a whirlwind vacation in the French Riviera where rumour had it her controversial ex-boyfriend Chris Brown visited her. Following their highly publicised altercation in 2009, for which Brown was charged with assault and making criminal threats and forced to do community service, Winfrey was one of the most powerful voices urging the singer against reuniting with Brown. Viewers will now have to wait for August 19 to see if the experienced interviewer will probe the new rumours of a rekindled romance.
