One of the most successful Jamaican-American artists of all time regaled a packed Red Bull Music Festival audience to tales from his groundbreaking career in the arts and activism.

The UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador visited the historic Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture for a fascinating conversation with writer, curator and activist Kimberly Drew through the lens of the city he calls home.

His 1965 album Calypso – the first record to ever go platinum – was recently inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

He was also a close friend and adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, putting him at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement – a cause that he has continued to campaign for through the decades.

The 91-year-old declared: “With the 50th anniversary of the assassinations of two of the most monumental men of the 20th century, Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy, we continue to be reminded of the impactful teachings which are very much applicable to today’s social movements.

“At this point in my long career, I’m rewarded to see the stand which women and now our youth are taking against the deeply rooted injustices in this country. The work has just begun.”
