The American Heart Association’s ‘Go Red for Women Day‘ kicked off on Friday, February 3, 2012 with Star Jones, Elizabeth Banks & Nick Verreos taking the lead. Go Red for Women called on women nationwide to Make It Their Mission to fight heart disease and learn how we all can save our own life and the lives of other women. There were celebrations around the nation raising awareness about the #1 killer of women…Heart Disease. Click to see pics!

Everyone especially women were encouraged to wear red and be fashionably fabulous. This event was held at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City. There’s just something about disease & fashion that makes us all feel a little better. My theory is it doesn’t make sense to feel bad and look bad right…? Well I guess the stars in the house felt the same way.
To kick off this great awareness campaign there were appearances by Project Runway’s celebrity stylist Nick Verreos, Emmy nominated actress Elizabeth Banks and American Heart Association national volunteer, TV personality & New York’s favorite lawyer, Star Jones. These three celebrities represented different ethnic communities Caucasion, Latino and African American which was really good in extending the awareness message to the masses. Each celebrity spoke briefly about the disease and how it affected their lives. Star Jones was very candid about her open heart surgery that changed her life and she even took a small dig at a former Celebrity Apprentice contestant (who is apparently very rich) by saying that not everyone believes she has a heart.
Facts about heart disease:
  • More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined.
  • Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women age 20 and over, causing one in three women’s death each year
  • Currently some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six American women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat.
  • Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease
