Say it ain’t so! Constance White, Editor-In-Chief of Essence Magazine is leaving the magazine that showcases black women of diverse skin tones and hairstyles in a positive light. According to the Maynard Institute, Dana Baxter, spokesperson for Essence Magazine, who declined to elaborate on the details, confirmed the sad news. It was reported by the Maynard Institute that her leaving is a result of corporate layoffs due to low revenue statistics.
White, born in England and raised by Jamaican parents, began her successful journalism career at Ms. magazine, as assistant to co-Founder Gloria Steinem, who is a infamous feminist and activist. The powerhouse journalist has had an accomplished career in various fashion forward and provocative publications such as the New York Times, Elle and W magazine. Her last position before working at Essence Magazine was at Ebay where she worked as Style Editor and Spokesperson.
White, who is a veteran journalist, was recently honored at the Caribbean American Heritage Awards (CARAH) for Excellence in Journalism in Washington, DC where she shared with our media team that her Caribbean heritage spills out in the pages of Essence. White, is an exemplary representative of the Caribbean diaspora and her cultural influence at Essence will be sorely missed, however if Ms. White is looking to change things up, we invite her here at RedCarpetShelley.com!!
