Caribbean born mega stars Rihanna and Nicki Minaj were among the winners at the BET Awards on June 26, 2016 even though both were no shows.
Bajan-star turned entrepreneur, Rihanna, won for Best Collaboration for the song “Work with Drake. The singer was not at the show because she is currently on the overseas leg of her Anti World Tour in the UK.
Trinidad-born Minaj won the title of Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, beating out legendary rappers like Lil Kim, Missy Elliott and Remy Ma. Minaj also was not at the ceremony to accept the award in person, but The Pinkprint album creator appeared to be interested in the outcome. She posted on Twitter after the show was over, “Did I win, u guys?”
The last woman to win the BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist besides Nicki was M.I.A. in 2009. Missy is the only other multiple winner in the category with 5 victories (2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008).
The 2016 BET Awards was held at the Microsoft Theater on Sunday, June 26 in Los Angeles. It included a politically charged celebration of black entertainment and tributes to Prince with performances from Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Usher, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Bilal, Stevie Wonder,Tori Kelly, Jennifer Hudson, Maxwell , Janelle Monáe, and Shelia E.
