A civic organization in Trinidad & Tobago is demanding that Soca superstar Machel Montano quit his post of Trinidad and Tobago’s Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), or be fired from that post.
The group, International Radio Emergency Support Coalition, (IRESC), is calling for Montano to quit because of his conviction on charges of assault and using obscene language.
The Trinidad and Tobago Newsday is reporting that Julien Mervyn Dedier, president of IRESC, In a letter addressed to UN Women Caribbean Sub-Regional Program Director Roberta Clarke in Barbados, stated that Montano’s action was not in keeping with the United Nations’ theme on the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.
Montano, the reigning Power Soca Monarch and Road March King, was found guilty last month on charges related to a 2007 fracas outside a nightclub in Port-of-Spain. Three other persons were also charged.
Sentencing against Montano and his associates is scheduled for January 17.
John Hubertson of the UN’s public information department said that the secretariat’s office does not appoint Goodwill Ambassadors and it is up to UN agencies to appoint respective ambassadors.
Mr. Hubertson noted that the office had not yet received any correspondence regarding Montano.
