Wyclef Jean’s short-lived presidential bid has ended just as quickly as it begun. The Haitian-born musician turned humanitarian recently announced his candidacy for the Haitian presidency. Unfortunately for Wyclef, however, the electoral council in Haiti has decided against allowing him to run. In fact, the council decided that only 19 of the 34 possible candidates were eligible to run. Among those, another Haitian singer, Michel Martelly, also known as Sweet Mickey,. and supported by former Fugee band member Pras.

Although an official reason for the rejection has not been forthcoming, it is widely believed that Wyclef fails to meet the 5 year residency requirement . That being said, Wyclef is not accepting the rejection without a fight. Wyclef announced via Twitter that his lawyers would be pursuing an appeal:

“Tomorrow our Lawyers are appealing the decision of the CEP. We have met all the requirements set by the laws. And the law must be Respected”

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out….
