The St. Kitts and Nevis government is in crisis following the decision by a majority of legislators to challenge Prime Minister Denzil Douglas in court.
The cabinet is hanging by a thread and could be declared illegitimate if the lawsuit filed in the Supreme Court of Justice prospers, Caribbean News reported today.
The court decided to resume the hearing on April 18, to have time to prepare the defense.
According to the opposition, the government headed by Douglas is illegal, because it is in the minority in the Parliament and refuses to submit to a vote of condemnation.
The motion was filed on December 11, 2012 and since then remains shelved.
Douglas stated on several occasions that the budget debate to be held this week, should take precedence over that proposal.
The St. Kitts and Nevis legislature has 14 seats, 11 of which are elected legislators, and three are senators appointed by the governor general, representative of the British Queen Elizabeth II and head of State for this Caribbean country.
