The Soca Monarch competition took place last night at Trinidad Carnival 2011. The competition started about 10PM and ended around 4:30AM with the results being announced at 5am, so it was a long night of entertainment. Machel Montano took the top prize at the Power Soca Monarch for the first time ever! Machel is now $2,000,000 richer.

Machel won with his hit “Advantage” beating out Iwer George who sang “Come to Meh”. Both competitors had the entire stadium singing and moving, however Machel represented a more modern stage presentation with his dancers flying into the crowd. ‘In third place was Bunji Garlin and his wife Faye Ann Lyons-Alvarez came in fourth.
In the other category, the Groovy Soca Monarch, Kes Dieffenthaler won with his tune “Wotless” beating Benjai who sang “ah Trini”. This competition was very close and could have gone either way. Destra came in third with ‘Cool it Down’ and Dexter “Blaxx” Stewart fourth with “Tantie Woi”
