After thrilling Hollywood audiences, Jamaican indie ‘Out the Gate’ now scheduled to open in New York City theaters May 13th, 2011. It is the first Caribbean movie to have multi theater opening since the 90’s.

The Jamaican action/drama feature film ‘Out the Gate’ starring Paul Campbell (Shottas, First Sunday) and Everton (E-Dee) Dennis, is scheduled to open Friday May 13th in New York City. The Caribbean community has been buzzing in anticipation since the film garnered rave reviews at its January Hollywood premiere. The movie also stars the Caribbeans favorite comedian Oliver Samuels, and Shelli Boone (Holla, Southland).

The story follows a dreamer (Dennis), who after a turn of unfortunate events, leaves his home in Jamaica to take his chance at making it big in the music business in Los Angeles. With struggles and perseverance he finds love and success only to have it all threatened when the Don of LA (Campbell) demands his dues. Reggae historian Roger Steffens called Out the Gate a vivid and moving reflection of the immigrant experience and the flagrant joy of musical creativity of our Jamaican cousins.”

The feature, shot on location in Jamaica and Los Angeles, is breaking grounds as the directorial debut of The Village Brothers, R. Steven Johnson and Qmillion. It also represents the first Jamaican film since the 90’s to have a multi-theater opening in New York City. The films producers are betting on NYC’s massive Caribbean community to come out and see their biggest stars grace the silver screen. Paul Campbell is easily one of the most recognized and compelling actors from Jamaica after starring in seven of Jamaicas biggest films, notes producer Keith Lewis, and Oliver Samuels career on Jamaican television and theatre has made him nothing less than legendary, he continued.

The four theaters chosen for the engagement are the AMC Bay Plaza Cinema 13, the Whitestone Multiplex Cinemas, Linden Blvd Multiplex Cinemas, and the Jamaica Multiplex Cinemas located in the heavily Caribbean populated boroughs of Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.

Plans are underway for the film to continue on to Jamaica, as well as Miami, Toronto, and London.
