Caribbean Heritage 2012 Salute to Hollywood and the Arts Honorees Announced

Caribbean Heritage Organization (CHO) and the Institute of Caribbean Studies, DC (ICS-DC) are pleased to announce that actor Antonio Fargas, actress Lorraine Toussaint, Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph and screenwriter and producer Rob Edwards will be honored at the 2012 Salute to Hollywood & the Arts gala to be held at the Sheraton Universal City in Los Angeles on Friday, June 29 during the 2012 Caribbean-American Heritage Month celebrations.

Known for his role as the incorrigible and loveable Huggy Bear in TV’s Starsky & Hutch, the tall, lanky and twinkle-eyed Antonio Fargas has roots in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Trinidad. His film credits include, Shaft, Car Wash and Pretty Baby. Most recently he’s played Doc, the local grocery store owner, in Everybody Hates Chris.

Trinidadian beauty, Lorraine Toussaint, is a veteran of film and stage. She appeared as Captain Kate Perry in Saving Grace, defense lawyer Shambala Green in Law & Order. She was also a regular guest on the drama Threat Matrix, as Carina Wright/Agent Cassandra Hodges. Toussaint co-starred with fellow Trini, the late Sullivan Walker in the 1993 ABC sitcom Where I live, the story of a West Indian-American family in New York.

Jamerican and diva extraordinaire, Sheryl Lee Ralph, is an acclaimed show business “pro.” Her award-winning body of work in film, television and the Broadway stage includes originating and creating the role of Deena Jones on Broadway in the landmark musical Dreamgirls, which earned her a Tony Award Nomination and a Drama Desk Award Nomination for Best Actress. On television, she has starred in It’s a Living, her own series New Attitude, the George Foreman series George, the hit comedy Designing Women and Dee on the smash series Moesha. Ralph is an accomplished author. Her most recent publication “Refining Diva, Life Lessons from the Original Dreamgirl” is available at through Amazon.com or at the June 29 Salute to Hollywood, where she will be available to sign copies.

Award-winning, Guyanese-American, Rob Edwards, an accomplished screenwriter and producer, is an industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience. His most recent career achievement includes his work as a writer on Disney’s Academy-Award and Golden Globe nominated The Princess and the Frog. Edwards has also written for Disney’s Academy Award-nominated animated feature, Treasure Planet. He has produced and written for popular television shows including: Full House, A Different World, The Marshall Chronicles, Roc, In the House and In Living Color, for which he received an Emmy Award nomination. He also worked on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Out All Night for NBC. He is currently working on The King of the Elves, based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick as well as Animated American for producers Robert Zemeckis, Bob Cooper and Dan Fogelman and Walt Disney Studios and Amulet: The Stonekeeper for Will Smith’s company, Overbrook Entertainment and Warner Bros
