The 2010 BET Hip Hop awards went down on on Saturday October 2 and, of course, your girl Red Carpet Shelley was in da building!!! As I prepared for the event in my blue sequined dress and hooka heels, my anticipation grew to a fever pitch as show time drew closer. Unfortunately, my anticipation was tempered by a disappointing show. Too many B, C and D listers and not enough A-list celebrities.

The show began with a show stopping performance of BMF with Rick Ross, Diddy and DJ Khaled which ended with a suprise showing from MC Hammer Hammer performing ‘Too Legit to Quit’ along with his usual crew of dancers. That was the GOOD.

The BAD was the show in general. Mike Epps did a good job however, with the exception of B.O.B. and the awesome pyrotechnics used during Diddy’s, Ricky Ross’ and Khaled’s performance, the show was ho hum at best.

Another bad was that Jay-Z was not present eventhough he was nominated a record-breaking 10 times! HOV won Perfect Combo (for his collabo with Alicia Keys on “Empire State of Mind”), CD of the Year (The Blueprint 3) and Best Live Performer! Some folks in the audience felt he was “too big” for the show but this is not true he has participated in previous shows.

Nicki Minaj also took home three awards. Nicki actually looked a bit conservative by her own standards and even made comment that she was trying to tone things down…She wore platinum blonde hair with a dominatrix looking outfit. Nicki took home the Rookie of the Year, Peoples Champ and the Made You Look award, which was awarded in recognition of her fashion flair. Last year, I was here in anticipation of the cypher, she told the crowd, referring to the artist rap freestyles that run in between the award presentations and performances. Now Im here in anticipation of my debut, Pink Friday. By the way, while we’re on the subject, with ‘Pink Friday” to be released next month, why didn’t Nicki Minaj perform? Epic fail…

On the subject of the Cypher, these segments gave us some of the best moments of the night. There were seven including Kanye West making an appearance with the G.O.O.D Music family Common, Pusha T, Big Sean and CyHi Da Prynce all dressed in suits. Another Cypher moment of note is the segment with father and son pairings from Ice Cube and his two sons and Rev Run and his sons: Jo Jo and Diggy. Diggy steals the show!!! He’s the next big thing – you heard it here first!

UGLY – why did a sista have to wait in line for an hour in the hot azz sun! I’m just sayin….Two more ugly awards Keri Hilson’s blond curly hair (love her, hate the hair!) and Fonzworth Bentlehy rapping! Stick to the umbrella dancing dude…ummmm – UGLY!

Here are the winners. Check out the show on October 12 at 8pm on BET.
