Last night on Nicki Minaj My Truth (Minaj’s three-part docu-series which means reality show!), Minaj described her sentiments regarding Barbara Walters’ comments about her following the now infamous Mariah Carey incident.

Minaj asks the question “am I not good enough …because I’m a little black girl that raps”?  She goes on to say if she were J Lo, Barbara would have reached out to her for a comment.   Okay, here’s a news flash Nicki – yes, you are one of the hottest acts out right now but you are still a relative newbie.  You are not to be compared to J Lo or Mariah.  Not because you’re not talented but, quite frankly, you simply do not have the body of work which would afford you the luxury of comparison to an American idol (irony of all ironies)!  Nicki Minaj has not paid her  dues to the business to the degree that these women have.  When you have been in the business for over two decades AND you’re still  relevant, that’s when you can throw these kind of jabs at Barbara Walters.  You are just not there…..yet.

Quite frankly, I find Nicki Minaj’s tirade disrespectful.   Now, hear me out – I’m not saying she has no right to feel the way she feels.  And, I agree Barbara’s comments were woefully one-sided (as mainstream media usually is) but as a young business woman who is still growing her brand, this is a bad PR move.  Mouthing off on an 80-year old media icon named Barbara Walters is just plain stupid!  What’s even more stupid is to air the whole thing for the world to see!

If Minaj was upset with Walters commentary and wanted to vet her frustrations, that’s exactly what high flutin’, overpaid PR people are for!  Minaj’s team should have reached out to Barbara Walters with an “official” statement.  Barbara ain’t got time to run down Nicki – she’s busy interviewing President’s and ish!

Nicki, you need fi sekkle down — rewind and come again!
