“Beyond the Lights” is the story of Noni, the music world’s latest superstar played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw. But not all is what it seems, and the pressures of fame have Noni on the edge (literally!) – until she meets Kaz Nicol (Nate Parker), a young cop and aspiring politician who’s been assigned to her detail.

What might be described as a modern day “Body Guard” which starred the late Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, Noni and Kaz are drawn to each other and fall fast and hard. Despite the protests of those around them who urge them to put their career ambitions ahead of their romance, they forge ahead with the romance. But it is ultimately Kaz’s love that gives Noni the courage to find her own voice and break free to become the artist she was meant to be.
Beyond the Lights is the latest from ‘Love & Basketball’ acclaimed Hollywood producer Gina Prince-Bythewood so I’m not surprised that the movie is already creating quite the buzz, even Oscar buzz! I actually saw Prince-Bythewood at the 2013 BET Awards where some of the red carpet scenes were shot. She has a distinctive viewpoint and she certainly knows how to tell a love story. I cannot wait to see this one!
