The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The 54th Annual Grammy Awards belonged to two people Whitney Houston and Adele. The night immediately opened with LL Cool J paying homage to Whitney Houston with a prayer. Great move to recognize Whitney’s passing immediately so as not to take away from the rest of the show or the nominees. Definitely good!!! Overall, the show was good but 3 1/2 hours is just too long for anyone to have to sit through an award show. I continued to watch, like everyone else, wanting to see the Jennifer Hudson tribute to Whitney which was (of course!) toward the end of the show.

When the tribute to Whitney finally started almost three hours into the show, I realized it was worth the wait. Jennifer Hudson tribute to Whitney was stellar. It was thoughtfully not over produced or over sung. It was just right and heartfelt. VERY good. .Many took to Twitter to express their disappointment that Whitney’s tribute was only one song. However, the Academy had only 24 hours to prepare and they didn’t want to throw something together that wasn’t a proper tribute. So, yes this was bad but understandable.

The other person who garnered much accolades was Adele. Kudos to the Grammys for getting this right. Adele won 6 well-deserved Grammys from her album Rolling in the Deep . Adele ties Beyonc for most awards won by a female artist in one night. Her performance was absolutely soul stirring. No pyrotechnics, no dancers, no slutty wardrobe, no auto-tune, straight singing, straight talent, No chaser GOOD!!! I hope this marks a return to good music.

Now, lets get to the ugly! NICKI MINAJ!!! I had to self-anoint myself with holy water after watching Minajs exorcism. SOOOOOOO inappropriate, so UGLY. Her mockery of the church and its rituals is nothing new but her creative execution lacked taste. The last time someone performed something so tasteless against the church, it was career suicideRemember Sinead OConnor? Nuff said..
