Plans for Culturma 2010 celebrated under the theme, “Cultruama 2k10, a unique Cultural Blend”, are underway and Manager of the Nevis Culturama Secretariat, Antonio Liburd, is inviting “all persons to support,” the festivities.

Speaking on preparations, Liburd said it will run from 23 July 3 Aug., and the programme of activities will remain as it was with minor changes to the dates of certain events. The official opening ceremony he said will take place on the 23 July

The programme line-up includes a clash of the bands, Calypso competition where seven Calypsonians will be selected in the semi-finals which is also carded on the programme to go up against the reigning Culturama King I Sour Sop.

He said this year, they have decided to separate the swimwear contest and have a Miss Swimwear competition which will be separate and apart and involve different contestants from the Miss Culturama Queen Pageant.

Liburd explained it will be done in that form because “in the past the swimwear segment was a precursor to the pageant and we found it was a bit strenuous on the contestants having to prepare for a full competition and then one week later to prepare for the Miss Culture pageant.” Hence, they are looking for six contestants between the ages of 18 and 25 to enter the contest which will be held on 25 July.

In relation to sponsors, Liburd said, “Sponsors who are normally associated with Culturama have not given commitment as such but, within the next couple of weeks, we are hoping that we can wrap up negotiations with (them).”

He said they are hopeful “that our custom sponsors would once again partner with the Nevis Culturama Committee. I know that this is really the year of the recession and things are a bit harder than last year, but we are still hoping that our sponsors will come forward this year and partner with us once again.”

Other events carded on the programme include Mr. and Miss Talented Youth Pageant. International night, calypso finals, the Culturama track race event, horse racing and Culturama JOuvert, street parade and the last lap activity.

He said a number of people have already started signing up to take part in the activities. “We are progressing quite steadily in terms of participation and persons coming forward and wanting to do activities as part of Culturama 2010.”
