Macy’s brings together June Ambrose and Johnetta Boone at eight stores nationwide for inspiring discussions on culture and fashion influence

This February, culture-defining trends take center stage as Macy’s examines the Soul Era of Black Style in celebration of Black History Month. To that end, last week at Macy’s Lenox Square Mall Atlanta hosted Caribbean Celebrity stylist and designer June Ambrose, film and television costume designer Johnetta Boone along with Academic Program Director, The Art Institute of Atlanta, Dr. Courtney Hammonds.  The event was hosted by CBS News Anchor Tracye Hutchins.

The trio of fashion forward couture veterans led a panel discussion on the Soul Era of Black Style.  Well, that was the premise but the panel participants took us on a much deeper dive.  Amongst other things, Dr. Courtney Hammonds talked about knowing yourself, June Ambrose discussed how she got her start in fashion and Johnetta Boone discussed the evolution of the costume designer.

There was also an informal fashion show contest of re-created trends from the Soul Era which showcased the talents of young, upcoming Atlanta designers. The winner’s use of kente cloth was brilliant, original and refreshing.

Unfortunately, the event ended on sort of a sour note when Ambrose took a spill. I, along with a few others, helped her up when we realized she had been cut and was bleeding… a lot!!! Despite being injured and bleeding profusely, Ambrose still agreed to take photos with her adoring fans and followers until she couldn’t take it anymore! She was one of the most pleasant celebrity encounters I have ever had.

The best part of the event however, was when June Ambrose still seated en banc on the panel told me she loved my look (it was a Bob Marley inspired look as the event was held on the 70th Anniversary of Bob Marley’s birth!).  When June Ambrose shared her opinion of my look with the other two panelists, at that moment, I died and went to fashion stylist heaven. Thank you Ms. Ambrose, you give me fashion life!
