Each year on Columbus Day Weekend masses from all over the Caribbean Diaspora descend on Miami to celebrate Miami Caribbean Carnival.  The annual event which attracts over 50,000 visitors each year is a cornucopia of Caribbean culture replete with masqueraders decked out in beautifully crafted costumes, the smell of Caribbean cuisine wafts through the air and not to mention the beat of the familiar sounds of soca music.

The Parade of the Bands takes place on Sunday October 13.. Each band selects a theme and depicts characters from traditional Caribbean folklore. The colorful costumes, feather headdresses, sequins and beads are all on display for the panel of judges. The “bands” play mas all while chipping down di six mile road — a trek and not for the faint of heart!.  . The winning band is chosen based on the originality, creativity and on stage presentation.

Every year Miami Carnival weekend touts some of the most anticipated events of the Caribbean Carnival year (not “official” Miami Carnival events) including Private Ryan’s “Soca Brainwash”;Socavivor’s “Rise and Shine” Beach Party, the Official Miami Carnival J’ouvert (my personal favorite) and the list goes on.

Fusing a unique blend of calypso, rock and reggae, Trinidad and Tobago natives Kes the Band are set to headline the main-stage at this year’s Miami Carnival concert. Other heavy-weight artists and bands include: Mr. Killa, Nailah Blackman, Nadia Batson, Teddyson John, Julien Believe and more.

Travel to the Carnival festival at the Miami DADE fairgrounds is easy and convenient. Shuttle buses will be provided from the Miami Dade Transit Golden Glades bus depot (in North Miami-Dade) and Tropical Park (in S.W. Miami Dade on 40th Street/Bird Road). Patrons will be able to park and ride for free to the Miami -Dade County Fairgrounds. The shuttle service party buses will run all day. Schedules of the shuttle services will be posted on the festival website.  For tickets and more information visit miamicarnival.org
