Mark Myrie, better known as Buju Banton, was released from McRae Correctional Facility in Georgia on December 7, 2018 after serving nine years. Banton, one of Jamaica’s most well-known reggae artists, is a beloved Grammy award winning artist who’s fans (including myself) have patiently awaited this day.

Video emerged on the internet of Banton boarding his flight to leave the United States and also arriving in Jamaica. Banton, looking more gray and a few pounds heavier appeared seemingly happy to finally be back home.

After his release, many celebrities took to social media to share their sentiments. Rap artist P. Diddy posted a message on Instagram. “Today is a glorious day. Buju is free. Let’s go!” he said.

The Jamaica Observerreported that Banton returned home over the weekend, where crowds of fans gathered at the airport to await his arrival. His friend and manager told the paper that Banton decided not to use the regular airport exit because he did not want to be mobbed.

“He felt the crowd was too big, and Buju had already been harassed by the dozens of passengers who traveled home with him … by taking pictures and videoing him, and asking questions on his way back home,” Donovan Germain said.

The musician went to the studio from the airport, and is looking forward to performing early next year, he added.

Banton’s team has announced that Buju will soon embark on a “Long Walk to Freedom tour” of which details will be forthcoming.
