A major volunteerism campaign, led by a former professional American football player, will soon get underway in Saint Lucia. Former NFL player Miles McPherson, president of Miles Ahead and Senior Pastor of the Rock Church in San Diego, said the volunteerism initiative dubbed “Do Something World – Saint Lucia” is set to take off on the Eastern Caribbean island nation this April following successful projects in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

The “Do Something World” campaign works with national stakeholders to “cooperate, commit and participate in community building projects that engender a spirit of brotherhood and have a life-changing impact on young people, families and communities across the focal country,” reported McPherson.

The campaign promotes “love and service to communities,” utilizing sustainable solutions, working in partnership with civic, business, church and state leaders. Through a concerted six-month volunteerism drive, the campaign hopes to see hundreds of volunteers serving and addressing key social issues in the community. The ultimate goal is to see lives changed by positively impacting young people in particular, and families in general across Saint Lucia.

“Something supernatural happens when someone invests in another person’s life. There is hope for communities wrestling with crime, murder, poverty, and apathy. If we can strengthen the family structure, and galvanize the community, we can improve the quality of life for generations to come,” commented McPherson.

The Saint Lucia campaign includes a two-day “Celebration Festival” at the Pigeon Island National Landmark on May 14 and 15, 2011. Popular Gospel music artistes will be featured and Miles Ahead plans to bring a team of about 100 people from San Diego and elsewhere to invest volunteer time in Saint Lucia.

The total value of the volunteerism effort, say organizers, is about US $2 million dollars.

Civic, business, church and state leaders, including Saint Lucia’s Minister of Tourism, Senator Allen Chastanet and the Saint Lucia Tourist Board, have thrown their support behind the volunteerism campaign championed by McPherson, a nationally known speaker whose bold, down-to-earth, humorous style has become his trademark. His messages challenge both the young and young-minded and often compel them to recalibrate their lives in light of the Gospel.

Dr. Tim Robinson, the spiritual head of the Streams of Power Ministries, co-chairs the country executive committee alongside First Caribbean International Bank’s Country Manager and President of the Saint Lucia Bankers Association, Mauricia Thomas-Francis.

Dr. Robinson unveiled the vision and introduced the early corporate partners which include LIME, Courts St. Lucia, STAR Publishing Company, Sandals Resorts, Consolidated Foods Limited and Prestige Auto Holdings Ltd.

During his three-day visit to Saint Lucia, Pastor McPherson will pay a courtesy call on Saint Lucia’s Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy and Prime Minister Hon. Stephenson King, and will meet with various leaders representing business, church and state.
