Caribbean Briton Steve McQueen is in the headlines again. Only days after his Golden Globes win, McQueen’s ’12 Years A Slave’ received nine nomination at the 86th Academy Awards nominations, which were announced “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth joined Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday.

The Caribbean-Briton is up for Best Director while the movie itself has been nominated for Best Picture.

“I am exhilarated, ecstatic,” he was quoted by Entertainment Weekly as saying. “Getting all those nominations, I’m so very happy.”

And it does not stop there. Lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofor has received his first Academy Awards nomination in the Best actor category while Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o are both nominated for Best Support Actor and Actress, respectively.

“It’s a bit surreal,” McQueen, born to a Trinidadian mother and Grenadian father in London, told USA Today. “Just because you never know. You never know. To have that kind of confirmation is just brilliant.”

McQueen’s movie also received the nomination for Best adapted screenplay as well as Best costume design, Best film editing and Best production design.

The Academy Awards will air live on ABC on March 2, starting at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
