A United States federal judge has set June 16 as the sentencing date for Jamaican Grammy Award-winning reggae star Buju Banton.
Court officials said that Judge James S Moody, Jr will preside over the sentencing of Banton, 37, whose real name is Mark Myrie. The reggae star faces up to 20 years in prison. Keep Buju in your thoughts….
A jury in Tampa federal court last month found Banton guilty of two drug charges and one weapons charge. It was the singer’s second trial. Another jury deadlocked in his first trial in September.
Banton’s attorney, David Markus, has asked for the singer to be released from custody pending his appeal. Markus also has filed a motion asking the court to acquit Banton or grant him a new trial.
Banton won a Grammy last month for best reggae album for his 2010 work entitled “Before the Dawn.”
