“There are about 800 fashion companies based in New York, and they contribute a combined
total of approximately 175,000 jobs to the city’s economy. Our mission behind Africa Fashion
Week (in fashion capitals) is about acknowledging the entrepreneurial element of Africa’s
fashion industry globally. Let’s face it, the fashion industry is a sector in Africa that is often
overlooked. However, it is one of the most accessible ways to create a living for women and the
youth. Whether it is actually designing the clothing, promoting the clothing, managing the
operations of a retail outlet, or any other relevant activity. We need to pay more attention to the
opportunities that reside in the industry and assist in formalizing its existence. Working with the
UN Foundation is an indicator of our seriousness towards building a structure around Africa’s
Fashion Industry.” Adiat Disu The UN Foundation builds campaigns and partnerships to connect people, ideas, and resources with the UN to reduce child mortality, empower girls and women, create a new energy future, secure peace and human rights, and promote technology innovation to improve health incomes.
Girls and women are critical to achieving the UN development goals but are overlooked and
underrepresented. The UN Foundation believes that working with and empowering girls and
women is the smartest and most efficient way to create healthy families, strong communities and
a better world. Master Class “Off the Runway” is the business exchange that invests in entrepreneurs, young creatives and women in the multi-billion dollar fashion industry. The event covers five themes
that center around Africa’s emerging industries through Adiree’s program, A.S.A.P (Adiree
Sustains Africa Program):

1. Promoting Africa’s Growth in Style, through Education & Entrepreneurship
2. Awarding & Supporting Africa’s Young Women Creative Entrepreneurs
3. Transforming Lives through Talent Grooming
4. Creating Success Stories That Inspire and Resonate Globally
5. Helping Brand Development, Business Management and Revenue Generation A portion of the proceeds from tickets sold will benefit the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation.
